There are a few things to be considered when a hunter takes his gear to the forest. As most know, it's all about just taking the essentials.
Today's hunter has a combination of both traditional to high tech. Sometimes, maps aren't as when it comes to knowing a topographical part of any wooded terrain, or to see if there is a vantage point to hide while waiting for the buck to appear.
Knives and axes are an integral part of a hunter once they managed to tag that buck. Mainly to help in the process of field dressing and cutting bone, it can simplify the task of having to clean the newly killed buck. Most hunters would recommend a non-serrated knife that would do most of the work and a lot of manufacturers have been shelling out knives just for that.
There are three types of guns that can be used, and the most common ones are rifles. Muzzleloaders are more traditional as they involve loading a lead or iron ball into the barrel and loading the chamber with a propellant. Occasional misfires may occur so extreme care must be made. While shotguns are powerful, they deal a little less damage on greater distances. Better suited for duck hunting and the like, a shotgun's spread fire action will hit any target on a wide range. Bows and crossbows are also used, and are more for the dexterous hunters who wish to hunt in a traditional way.
Binoculars and scopes are also essential tools when it comes to deer hunting, and for obvious reasons since they help the hunter locate that hidden buck in a few hundred yards.
As for modern gadgets, most GPS devices are used mainly to check if the hunter is standing on an estimated deer population. Of course it can't track down deer on the sly, but at least it will give an idea where they might be given to the number of reports for deer sightings.
And finally, parkas and camouflage outfits. Blending in with the environment is the best way to sneak upon the unsuspecting buck.
Though the essential tools may not need be as pricey as a GPS device, it's best to know what is needed when it comes to being a serious hunter. Brand names may vary and not all of them may work the way they are expected. Everything boils down to how a hunter would be comfortable with the tools he or she has.
When people go camping, there are a few things that must be carried on the trip. This usually includes a backpack, clothes, tent, cooking utensils, blankets, food and water.
One thing that the group must have to be used in an emergency is a survival kit. This will be very useful in treating someone injured or for those who get lost along the way.
Here are some of the essentials that people should always have when going camping for a few days.
1. Studies have shown that wearing a jacket or a sweater is not enough when camping out in the woods. This means the individual must always have a box of matches. This can be used to build a fire to cook food as well keep everyone warm - especially when it is very cold in the evenings.
This should be placed in a waterproof case to prevent it from getting wet making it impossible to use.
2. The group must also carry a map. This will make it easy for everyone to keep on the right track.
3. The person must also have a compass. Some people think that a global positioning satellite is the best way to keep everyone on track. This device can pinpoint the group?s location but not the actual bearings, which need to be used with the map.
4. The campers must not forget to take a flashlight, some extra batteries and bulbs. This is because these things wear out with use and there is no telling when it will run out, especially when traveling at night.
5. People must not forget to take some food and water. It's a good idea to take some extra just in case anyone gets hungry or thirsty. Studies have shown that a person can survive for almost 2 weeks without food and only with water should anything happen to the campers during the trip.
6. It's a good idea to take along a pocketknife. This can be used to cut wood for the fire, repair the tent should it be damaged or help the group hunt for food in case the supplies run out.
7. The most important thing to have is a first aid kit. This should have sterile gauze, pads, bandages, needles and thread that can be used to treat minor cuts or injuries.
These things should be checked and replenished each time before going out on a trip because there is no telling what can or will happen when people go out camping.
Hunting is a sport that has captured the imagination of almost every strapping lad and occasional lady from the East Coast to the West. In some circles, it is considered a male baptism of fire, a rite of passage. By statistics alone, hunting is well-accepted by the male population of America.
Some states are well-known for different types of hunting areas. New York as a state is rich in small game (rabbit, hare, squirrel, and grouse) as well as a number of species of fish.
Statistically speaking, hunting in New York State accounts for about $115 million in state travel, income, and sales annually. This amount can support approximately 2,326 teachers or fund the education expenses of about 11,559 students yearly.
New York State also has various reserves to hunt in for the small game hunter. The State owns over 80 WMA?s or Wildlife Management Areas, containing a little over 124,000 acres of uplands and 53,000 acres of wetlands.
Here are some New York State public lands available for hunting. You are required to check with the local authorities for information on licenses and open seasons:
1. Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area (WMA). New York State?s largest WMA, covering over 11,000 acres of natural wilderness. This area favors grouse, turkey and deer. The land is not suitable for agriculture so the State acquired it for use as a game refuge. The forests are made up of birch, beech, maple and hemlock with a smattering of pine and conifers.
2. Happy Valley WMA. Good for hunting small game. The area is more or less flat and pocked with areas of poor drainage, creating marshes that attract waterfowl. This area receives a lot of precipitation and it is advised that hunters equip for the occasion.
3. Little John WMA. This 8,020 acre lot is heavily forested. Few roads and tracks dot the landscape. It is a refreshing welcome for the veteran hunter.
4. Rattlesnake Hill WMA. This 5,100 acre land is what most people would describe as rolling. Located near agricultural lands, this Wildlife Management Area, is dynamic for its diversity of woodlands, conifers, meadows and old apple orchards.
5. High Tor WMA. This area is rugged with a lot of steep hiking for hunters looking for a challenge. Rocky hills dot the landscape.
6. Erwin WMA. This 3,000 acre piece of property is covered with hardwoods and conifer plantations. The area is hilly and steep as well.
7. Hanging Bog WMA. This area is similar to the Rattlesnake Hill WMA.
Cooking pleasure depends on both the setting and the mood of the person. People usually prefer the comfortable assets of a kitchen because they say this is the hub of enthusiasm. However, there are those who love experimenting and trying out new methods in cooking. Some, on the other hand, study different types of cooking for their advantage.
Cooking when outside the comfort of your home can be extraordinary. The knowledge and skill could also aid you whenever you are camping or at retreats. One of the most favored and known outdoor cooking is wood outdoor cooking method.
Wood outdoor cooking method is the simplest of all kinds of outdoor cooking. It involves the use of wood and requires your roasting skill's. Yes, that's right! In wood outdoor cooking, you will just simply roast your food on the campfire.
This is the reason why basic knowledge in building campfires is a must in the wood outdoor cooking method. In building campfires you have to select an area which is leveled. Afterwards, start digging a pit, which you will then surround with rocks. Upon creating the pit, you can now start constructing a tepee-type fire.
In building the tepee fire, you must first make a pyramid of short sticks approximately one to two inches in diameter and eight inches long. You fasten the other ends of the wood to the ground for that pyramid shape. After doing this, you can now use smaller wood to fill the spaces between the diagonally positioned sticks.
This wood structure needs only to be lit and voila you can now cook your meal on it! Just by using pieces of wood you can cook bacon, hot dogs, smores, and marshmallows. These are the usual foods toasted and roasted on campfires and they are the actually the favorites of campers, especially students.
Moreover, the wood outdoor cooking method is efficient. Yes, because you won't need any expensive cooking materials all you need is wood and flame. This is also the reason why campers prefer this cooking method, since they no longer need to carry heavy equipments just to satisfy their cooking needs.
However, also do take note that the major setback of this particular cooking is that you can't cook everything. All you can do is roast foods.
The wood outdoor cooking method is indeed an entirely different manner of cooking. This is your new cooking adventure, just keep in mind that roasting and toasting is all that you can do, so goodbye boiling and adieu frying.

The most significant aspect of understanding hunting with handguns is to be familiar with your prey and determine how to move toward it to get within killing ?range?.
A successful and safe handgun hunt should start long before hunting season begins. This means that during the off season, you need to study and understand your weapon.
Your familiarity with your weapon often determines when you will be ready to put it into use. If the weapon is still unfamiliar to you, you are not yet ready to hunt.
Purchasing a handgun then setting it aside in storage until the hunting season begins, is not a good idea. You must practice as often as possible when hunting season is approaching.
For instance, when you have a ?semi-automatic? handgun, know what must be done when it jam; determine the length of time it will take you to successfully correct the problem and reload it. You need to reload it quickly, preferably within two seconds or less, and need to continue practicing until you can achieve this skill. You also need to familiarize yourself with how to remove and reinsert the magazine.
The key to successful ?handgun hunting? is to determine your limits and then hunt within those limits at all times. The more you practice, the more you will know what types of shots it is possible for you to generate. With a realistic self ability assessment, you can establish your reputation for clean, quick and humane kills; which should be the objective of all hunters regardless of what tools one chooses to use.
For the small-game hunter, your limit will be the farthest distance that you can shoot while keeping all of your shots steady. What matters most is your shooting consistency, not how you often you can hit your target.
Handgun hunting is a great challenge and will teach you that besides aiming and using a handgun, there are many other factors that still need to be considered, such as wind direction, the animals habits so that you can effectively figure out the tactics needed to get closer to your target, or how to plan an ambush when the animal passes by.
Furthermore, you must realize that a camouflage outfit is not nearly as significant as the ability to sit quietly and remain still.
Hunting will teach you patience which is necessary to be able to watch your target escape because you know that it is outside your ?effective range?. When you are able to do this you will be a hunter that will be respected by others.
Henry loved his job a lot because the job entailed going to places both locally and abroad to work on business mergers between clients. Before going out, a checklist was always prepared to make sure the right number of clothes, underwear and socks was placed into the suitcase.
The family also traveled with him often to have fun together. This year was going to be different because the group will be going camping. There would be no flying this time - just a lot of hiking to get to the destination.
Henry was very excited and felt a survival checklist was needed before going on the trip. Unfortunately, this individual had no idea about the essentials needed to go camping. Some research needed to be done via the Internet to find out these things.
The information enabled Henry to make a survival checklist which will make it easier for the family to find these items in the sporting goods store.
Since the family won?t be staying in a cabin, a tent that could house a party of five needed to be purchased. The sales clerk was able to teach the executive how to assemble it so there won?t be any problems putting it up at the campsite.
Part of survival is having a sufficient amount of food and water for the trip. Since it is quite heavy to hold in a backpack, the best choice is to buy a cooler in which to store everything.
The group bought some canteens for water to prevent anyone from becoming dehydrated. Since there was no way to tell how cold it could get up there, Henry felt it was necessary to buy some warm jackets.
The family could get lost when going out into the woods for the first time. Fearing this could happen, Henry bought a map and a compass to make sure the group will always be on the right bearing.
Some flashlights and extra sets of batteries were also purchased to enabled the family to walk safely at night and lie on the ground to watch the stars in the sky.
There are two things that Henry bought without telling the others. The first was a pocketknife while the other was a first aid kit. These were kept hidden and will only be brought out in the event of an emergency.
It took almost 4 hours for Henry and the family to pick up everything. Each time an item was bought, this was crossed off the survival checklist. With everything ready, this person felt the weekend would go without incident and it woud be another fun filled trip.
In every State where whitetail deer and other animals flourish has set rules and regulations that need to be followed. So unless the hunter happens to be visiting that said State, be prepared to do some homework before going into the woods.
Some of the more popular whitetail hunting States like Missouri, Colorado, Texas or even Arkansas have strict laws when it comes to hunting. Missouri, for example, has a $175 charge for non-residents when it comes to deer hunting of any type, and a lot of other things you need to pay, and that's just for firearms. It also excludes some of the other things such as being fur handlers and fishing. Considering the need to protect the number of wildlife to ensure its survival, a controlled system is needed. A limit of two deer and/or turkey per hunter is the requirement for obtaining the permit and can also be purchased online at http://mdc.mo.gov/regs/permits.htm.
There have been some recent disputes about the large amount of fees needed just enjoy the thrill of the hunt, but all thing considered it's not like being back in the earlier days where hunting was a necessity rather than just recreation.
During the 1940's the need to preserve wildlife has been passed through several States, considering the time where farmers have been complaining about the whitetail deer destroying crops so it became more of a rubout of these animals. It would soon become something like a tourist attraction for some of these States to have deer and other wildlife present in most of the public parks and forests, amounting to millions of dollars in tourist revenue. It has become apparent that preserving wildlife and keeping control is a cycle that every hunter needs to respect and understand, thus the need for permits.
This year, the deer season is still around for most of the Northwest States for deer, wild turkey and other recreational game. Studies have shown that the risk of accidental collisions with has lessened for the past few years due to regularized and controlled hunting practices by residents and non-residents alike.
With some of these States who have a perfect love and respect for their wildlife is something to be admired, given to the dedication and the need to control and protect these animals in order for a future generation of hunters out there to still have a place to enjoy the very thing this nation has survived.
In prehistoric times when farms did not exist, humans hunted animals for food. People still do this and now hunting is used for more than just filling one?s stomach.
For the more than a hundred years indiscriminate killing of animals led to the extinction of some of these species. People have taken notice of this and enacted laws to protect those species that are endangered.
Small game hunting is done during different times of the year. Specific hunting seasons were created to maintain the animal population in the limited areas where these animals live.
People who want to hunt have to obtain a license from the state and strictly follow the rules; both for the safety of the people and the environment.
There is an open season and a closed season for hunting most animals. People are allowed to hunt only at certain times in a given year; the time (season) may last only a few weeks or months.
An example is the squirrel which can be killed from mid-summer until early spring. Regulations only allow the person to hunt a maximum of 10 on a single day.
The regulations for birds are different because of their migratory patterns. Those who want to hunt ducks are only allowed to do so in the fall. The season for hunting ducks varies in different areas and lasts for varying periods of time. Since there are many duck hunters, the maximum number that a single person can bag (shoot down) is generally 4 in a single day.
Those who want to hunt smaller and more plentiful birds can hunt doves; since the bag limit of these birds can be as many as 15 per day.
The regulations regarding the hunting of crows are very different from any other bird. They can be hunted from summer until early spring - about 6 months. There is no limit to the number that can be shot down and hunters kill as many as they desire.
Animals such as the armadillo, skunk, coyote, and beaver can be hunted year round and there is no limit to the number of these creatures that are killed.
As an alternative to using guns, hunters can use baited traps to catch these animals. There are a variety of these devices available for purchase at the sporting goods stores.
Check with the state to determine the dates of the open season and how many of the desired species can be killed; have fun hunting in the wild rather than getting in trouble with the law.
Small game hunters have many stories to tell about hunting and the thrill that comes along with it. For most Americans fishing and hunting are simple pleasures they look forward to on weekends. The fun that goes with camping, flaming marshmallows and hotdogs cooked over a campfire on sticks, and laughter about stories being told around the campfire is simply a delight.
One touching story about small game hunting was told by a retired police officer, James Rogers. His 16 years of weekend hunting ended when the police car hit the wall of a retail store and caused him to lose his ability to walk. After a long month of sulking, he decided that hunting was still designed for him. Seated in a wheelchair, he posted a forum on the internet seeking for organizations that were willing to take him and other disabled hunters to the woods or river to fish.
After a few hours, he received an enormous amount of e-mail from family and friends of disabled hunters who were more than willing to take him. They shared the same story of not giving up their hunting despite their physical condition. Today, weekend hunting is still part of the James? life and his love for the activity brought him closer to people sharing the same disability.
Another story was told by a felon, Mark Whittaker, who was put behind bars for a drug related offence. He left his wife and 1 year old child behind to serve his term and after 11 long years, he finally was released from prison. His happiness vanished when he realized that his only son could not identify with him. A huge gap kept them from having good conversation to catch up after 11 years of separation.
Mark figured out that this should not be the case: he introduced his son to the hobby he enjoyed before he went to prison, small game hunting. During the process of teaching his son to hunt for rabbits and squirrel, they talked more and more. After several weekends of going to the woods and spending time together alone, the wall between them slowly dissolved. They became each other?s best friends and today, nothing can keep this man and his son apart.
Small game hunting is not all just about hunting the game species out there; for some people it is much more than that. It can be a life changing experience that can bring people together while doing the thing they love the most.
Today rifles and hunting shotguns are the more prominent way when it comes to hunting deer and other animals, consider the earlier settlers, where instead of a blunderbuss, the best way was using a bow.
Bow hunting is another way when it comes to hunting deer. Meant for the dexterous, bow hunting is a more delicate science and not just a sport, where the hunter must determine what sort of bow would be comfortable to use. This is nothing like Robin Hood and his longbows, I mean those were the only bows back then aside from crossbows. The difference here is to know where your draw length is, or the distance and strength on pulling the bow.
Several bow types like compound, stick types (the English longbows) or something like Rambo would use as long as there are no explosive heads. Never mind the brand for now since a lot of manufacturers have been making some of the best bows out there for hunting. And if a beginning bow hunter thinks it's all about shooting arrows, guess again. Since most modern bows can be tuned according to the weight of drawing, it would be beneficial for those with weak arms or probably of advancing age. Just because a strong or heavy bow will kill just about anything, guess again. There's science involved to know if the arrow's trajectory is as flat as possible depending on the weight of the draw. For instance, killing a whitetail deer with an 80 lb. draw has a high risk of failure or the arrow falling off the rest comparing with a 60 lb. draw. Accuracy is the key when it comes to archery, and a sturdy and easy-to-use bow is the ticket for the perfect kill.
There are other things to consider, like what sort of shaft can be used. Similar to using a certain ammunition for a rifle, arrows can either be the cedar, aluminum, or carbon. Aluminum shafts are sturdy, lighter and much cheaper than carbon, and the best ammo to use for the hunt. In fact, it doesn't stop there. Fletching or plastic type vanes are an integral part to make sure that any arrow shot will be flat and swift. Depending on the condition and user, vanes won't be affected by cold or wet conditions in comparison to feathers, while the feathers offer a quieter shot once released.
It takes practice and being comfortable with a bow in order to hunt the old fashioned way, and it makes no difference if the person lives a modern lifestyle or deep into the woods.
